About Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle is a metropolitan borough in North East England, located 8.5 miles from the North Sea. The city originates from a Roman settlement known as Pons Aelius, or Hadrian’s Bridge.
Newcastle derives its name from the castle built by William the Conqueror’s eldest son, Robert Curthose, in 1080. Curthose built his castle on the site of the old Roman fort for its superb defensive position over the River Tyne.
Newcastle Gateshead Quayside is famous for its series of impressive bridges, including Tyne Bridge; the first road/rail bridge in the world, Robert Stephenson’s High Level Bridge; the Swing Bridge; and the tilting Millenium Bridge. Each is innovative in its own right.
