About Leeds

Leeds is the largest city in West Yorkshire and is the nucleus of the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough. The city grew from a small manorial borough in the 13th century to a major manufacturer and trade centre for wool in the 17th and 18th centuries. The town expanded further as the Industrial Revolution brought with it iron foundries, engineering works, printing and other industries.

Leeds’ Victoria Gate shopping centre is a fine example of a modernised Victorian arcade and Leeds corn exchange is a further remnant from the Victorian era with a circular domed design. Leeds’ Grand Theatre houses the only national opera company located outside of London and the Leeds Royal Armouries Museum possesses the UK’s official collection of historical arms and armour.
