About Newcastle
Newcastle upon Tyne was originally a Roman fort dubbed Pons Aelius (Hadrian’s Bridge). Its position on the River Tyne and its close proximity to the North Sea made it a perfect defence at the end of the Hadrian’s Wall frontier.
