About Manchester

Manchester City is the nucleus of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area. It is formed from the continuous conurbation of smaller towns that spread during the Industrial Revolution when the district experienced great success in textile manufacture.

Manchester’s recorded history starts around AD 79 with the Roman fort of Mamucium or Mancunium. It became an official city in 1853, and was the first industrialised city in the world. The Manchester Ship Canal was finished in 1894 with the purpose of providing a trade route directly to the Irish Sea.

Today, Manchester is famous for its two world-class football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City.
