Manchester City lies within the UK’s second-most populous urban area: the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, which has a population of 2.7 million. The city itself is formed from a continuous conurbation of smaller towns and their urban spread.
The earliest recorded history of Manchester starts around AD 79 with the Roman fort of Mamucium or Mancunium. It became an official city only in 1853, after accelerated growth due to a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Manchester was the first industrialised city in the world and its industry prompted the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal. The canal opened in 1894 and connected Manchester directly to the Irish Sea for trade and transportation of goods.
Today, Manchester is famous for its two world-class football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City. It also holds The University of Manchester; a public research university that has produced great advances in science and technology, and owns the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jodrell Bank Observatory.
