What are retrofit sprinkler systems?
Existing structures repurposed for residential use often require a retrofit sprinkler system.
The same situation may arise if the layout of a domestic home has been significantly changed.
Why does my new home renovation need extra fire protection?
Changing the layout of your home could increase the fire risk to residents, particularly in the following circumstances.
The creation of an open-plan living space
Open-plan spaces allow fire to spread more easily than in a traditional layout, where small, separate rooms act as compartments, helping to restrict its spread.
Attic and basement conversions
Attic and basement conversions can be difficult to evacuate quickly.
Residential fire sprinkler systems give occupants early warning of fire and immediately start to suppress flames, allowing more time for evacuation.
Armstrong Priestley domestic fire sprinkler systems
Sprinkler systems can be fitted into any residential building.
We have many years of experience installing residential fire sprinkler systems in private homes of all types, including family homes, one-bedroom apartments, and high-rise residential buildings.
We supply residential properties with fire sprinklers designed to the relevant standards, including but not limited to BS9251 and EN16925.
Will a sprinkler system provide sufficient fire protection?
Sprinkler systems are widely used and highly effective. You can read Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s positive recommendation of sprinkler systems here.
Their review includes the following statistic:
‘The total number of deaths from fire, worldwide in sprinklered buildings, is only 50 compared to thousands in unprotected buildings. This is a record no other fire system can match.’
How do sprinkler systems work?
The effectiveness of fire sprinkler systems lies in their simplicity.
Each sprinkler head contains a heat-sensitive phial, which breaks when the surrounding temperature rises.
The phial has been blocking the water mist of another fire suppression agent being held at high pressure.
When the phial is removed, the water is dispersed onto the flames at high pressure, soon bringing them under control and allowing occupants to evacuate safely.
