The main types of fire hazard in commercial buildings
Warehouses and other commercial properties are often at high risk of fire because they store flammable materials.
For example:
Solids
Wood, paper, cloth and plastics
Liquids
Paint, oil, diesel and petrol
Gases
Propane and natural gas
Armstrong Priestley fire sprinkler systems offer comprehensive fire protection, whatever the cause of the blaze.
Are fire sprinkler systems effective in preventing and controlling fires?
The National Fire Sprinkler Network (NFSN) recently analysed data from over 2000 fires that was provided by Fire and Rescue Services across the UK.
The report concluded that sprinkler systems were highly effective, successfully controlling over 94% of fires.
You can read the full report here.
Why are in-rack sprinkler systems so important for fire suppression in warehouses?
Warehouse fires are common due to the materials commonly found in commercial buildings, but the building’s design can often encourage rapid fire spread, resulting in significant damage.
Many warehouses are arranged in a grid layout with high racks of shelving on either side of narrow aisles. This design allows flames to leap from rack to rack, spreading quickly through the building.
In-rack sprinkler systems act quickly to deprive flames of oxygen and control fires, preventing further spread.
You can find details of a recent warehouse project that we completed for a large client here. The project involved the installation of over 96,000 sprinkler heads, including in-rack sprinklers.
How do in-rack sprinkler systems work?
In-rack sprinklers are distributed throughout the warehouse’s racking systems.
Each fire sprinkler head is fitted with a phial of heat-sensitive liquid. When the surrounding air reaches a specific temperature, the liquid in the phial expands and shatters the glass, releasing a water mist or another suppressant onto the flames.
Water mist is an effective solution in many situations, but alternative types of suppressants, including non-toxic gases and carbon dioxide, can be used to prevent water damage to sensitive equipment or stock.
