Why is effective fire suppression essential in logistics facilities?
Logistics facilities pose several potential fire risks due to the nature of the business, the building’s design, and the contents that may be stored within.
Design
A logistics warehouse can be extensive and open plan to allow easy access to stock. This design does not provide fire breaks and can encourage the spread of fire.
Contents
Many logistics businesses handle and store highly flammable materials, electrical devices, and other stock that is likely to catch fire.
For example, vehicle fires are a constant risk in the transport and logistics sector due to the presence of fuel.
The wider business impact
The impact of a warehouse or logistics centre fire can be far-reaching and costly, as it can disrupt supply chains, affecting your business and those of your clients. A large fire could cause reputational damage.

Armstrong Priestley Fire Suppression Systems
Our fire suppression systems use automatic sprinklers to detect fires and then suppress the flames with a water mist, dispersed chemicals, or gases.
The sprinkler heads contain a phial of heat-sensitive liquid that acts as a stopper, holding back water or other flame-suppressing agent contained in the pipes.
The phial shatters when the temperature in the local environment exceeds a certain point, indicating the presence of flames.
Once the phial has been removed, the fire-suppressing agent is dispersed onto the flames.

Other necessary fire safety measures
After installing an automatic fire sprinkler system, it is still essential to take additional precautions to prevent fires.
Fire risk assessment
A fire risk assessment will help you to understand the significant fire risks within your premises.
Fire extinguishers
Strategically placed fire extinguishers will enable staff to put out the most minor blazes as soon as they start.
Fire alarm systems
Fire alarm systems can be both automatic and manually activated to ensure staff are aware of fires and begin to evacuate.
Fire doors
Fire doors slow the spread of fire through the building.
